Hazardous materials could be located in the most unlikely places such as the Kiddie Kollege Day Care Center in southern New Jersey where one-third of the children tested abnormally high for mercury levels. Their nursery sat on the grounds of a former thermometer factory that had never been appropriately investigated and cleaned.

If the realtor and authorities would have enlisted Mark Annis ANCO’s services, the devastating health violation could have been avoided by cleaning the site to comply with state guidelines and municipal regulations.

With their innovative techniques and advanced monitoring of progress in the field, ANCO offers the most up-to-date, quality services such as the underground storage tanks that offer an alternative to above ground tanks when New Jersey’s regulated commercial tanks number 80,000.
Mark Annis Gillette Focus on America segment will feature interviews with ANCO representatives and tips on what to look for and consider when seeking out a solution for a potential or existing hazards.

ANCO first obtained municipal permit #1458-14, then after completion of an underground utility mark out, mobilized to the site and excavated around the tank. Vapors were purged via displacement with dry ice. The tank was cut open with a sparkles air chisel, then was vacuumed and cleaned by Lorco Petroleum of Elizabeth, NJ. Corrosion holes were observed through the tank shell. Gasoline contaminated soil was observed after removing the tank. The NJDEP was notified of the confirmed discharge and case 14-12-17-1208-44 was assigned.

Mark Annis Gillette ANCO remobilized to the site the next day with a larger excavator and dug out two triaxle truckloads of impacted soil, which was staged on site on plastic, then covered with plastic sheeting. Once soils were transported to a disposal facility, total tonnage was reported to equal 49.03 tons.

The tank was found to be lying in a bedrock “cradle”, meaning that at the time of tank installation the pit had been advanced into bedrock. Weathered shale was encountered at the 30” depth and the competent bedrock depth was found to lie at 3-4’ below grade. Four (4) post-excavation soil samples, identified as SA through SD, were collected at the soil-bedrock interface from the tank excavation pit sidewalls.

Samples were collected in Encore samplers then analyzed for Volatile Organic compounds and Lead. The post excavation soil sample results for samples SA through SD indicate that VO levels were below detection limits and that Mark Annis Gillette Lead levels were well within compliance limits.

No groundwater was encountered during excavation and sampling activities; however a groundwater investigation was required and performed. A bedrock monitor well was installed and sampled. Analytic results proved there to be no groundwater impact.
